The Guru Gobind Singh did not choose a successor to take his place after his death. He said that the Sikh holy book of scriptures was a guru. Guru Granth Sahib plays a central role in the Gurdwara. Sacred whisks called Chauris are waved over it and at the end of the evening it is put on someone's head and taken to a large bed in a bedroom by followers.
