A statue of Jesus at the visitor center at Hill Cumorah . The Mormon web site describes Joseph Smith's encounter with Jesus as follows: \n\nDuring the 1820s, upstate New York experienced a period of religious revivals. Joseph Smith Jr., a 14-year-old boy, lived in Palmyra, where he attended the services of various religions. He searched the Bible to discover religious truth. While searching the New Testament, he read, "If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him" (James 1:5). Joseph was inspired to ask God the questions that had been troubling him. One morning in the spring of 1820, he went to the woods near his home, found a secluded place, and knelt down to pray. While praying, a miraculous event occurred, which Joseph later described: "I saw a pillar of light exactly over my head, above the brightness of the sun, which descended gradually until it fell upon me. . . . When the light rested upon me I saw two Personages, whose brightness and glory defy all description, standing above me in the air. One of them spake unto me, calling me by name and said, pointing to the other-This is My Beloved Son. Hear Him!" (Joseph Smith-History 1:16-17). These two personages, God the Father and His Son Jesus Christ, instructed Joseph not to join any of the churches then established, but instead to wait for further direction in the restoration of Christ's Church.\n\nJoseph was later entrusted with a sacred record written on golden plates. Through the power of God he translated the record, known as the Book of Mormon: Another Testament of Jesus Christ. He was also instrumental in organizing and restoring The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, of which he became the first prophet and president. A replica of the golden plates given to Joseph Smith Jr.on display at the Hill Cumorah visitor center in Palmyra New York.\n\nThe Mormon.org site describes the encounter as follows: \nIn September 1823, Joseph Smith was visited by a heavenly messenger named Moroni, in the same way that angels often appeared to Church leaders in the New Testament (see especially the book of Acts). He informed Joseph that God had a work for him to do. Moroni told Joseph that a record of the ancient inhabitants of the American continent was buried in a nearby hill and that the record contained the fulness of the gospel of Jesus Christ. \nIn September 1827, Joseph received the record, which was written on thin plates of gold. We now know it was not uncommon for people from the era of ancient America to keep records on metal plates. Joseph translated the book into English by the inspiration of God. The book is called the Book of Mormon: Another Testament of Jesus Christ It is named after Mormon, an ancient prophet who compiled the sacred record. The book verifies, as another testament of Christ, the reality and divinity of Jesus Christ. It is, then, a second witness that affirms the truth of the Bible. The Book of Mormon was published in 1830. Since that time it has blessed the lives of millions of people through its powerful message about Jesus Christ and His gospel. They will see the Son of Man coming in the clouds with great glory. And he will send his angels with a loud trumpet call, and they will gather his elect from the four winds, from one end of the heavens to the other.” (Mark 24:27:30-31)This was the first electronic image that I created for the “Reflections of Christ” portfolio. I wanted the sky to look as if it was ripping apart with fire and explosives. Seven Portraits of ChristThere are seven portraits in this image. I have chosen the number seven, as it is God’s perfect and complete number. The primary image is the crucifixition of Christ; by dying he opens the gateway to heaven. His arms blend into the clouds opening the way to God. The snake that is wrapped around Christ and the cross represents Satan and sin. Christ bore the sins of the world for once and for all. At the cross, Christ has overcome sin, death, and Satan. The second image of Christ (bottom right) is where Mary is holding the dead king in her arms. His limp body is lying in her arms, as tears fall from her eyes. To the left of this image you can find a faint image of Christ in prayer to the father. The forth portrait can be found in the bottom left where again he is lying in Mary’s arms. To the right of this image there is a faint image of Christ’s face leaving his body to signify that His spirit lives on, and death has no hold on him. Finally, the seventh image is Christ in the clouds located at the head of the cross. His hands are outstretched welcoming all to come and receive his gift of grace offered through the cross. “Therefore there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus, because through Christ Jesus the law of the spirit of life set me free from the law of sin and death.” (Romans 8:1 NIV)“God made him who had no sin to be sin for us, so that we might become the righteousness of God. As God’s fellow workers we urge you not to receive God’s grace in vain.” (2Corinthians 5:21-6:1 NIV)Model Release on file for all models Father, Into Your Hands I Commit My Spirit“Father, into your hands I commit my spirit. And having said this, he breathes his last words. At that moment, the curtain of the temple was torn in two, His sacrifice is over and Jesus is reunited with the Father.” (Luke 24:46 NIV)I wanted to create an image that would illustrate the moment that Christ returned home. Here the cross is represented by pure white light that engulfs his body, ends his pain, and brings him into heavenly peace. There are again seven images of Christ in this photograph with the last image being a white dove that represents the Holy Spirit.Model release on file Mother Mary“The Angel said to her, ‘Do not be afraid, Mary, you have found favor with God. You will be with child and give birth to a son, and you are to give him the name Jesus. He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High. The lord God will give him the throne of his father David, and he will reign over the house of Jacob forever; his kingdom will never end.’” (Luke 1:30 NIV)In this image I wanted to show the birth of the baby Christ. If you look to the left and right of Mary and the baby, you will see Christ praying to the Father made up by clouds. To the left of the baby, Jesus reaches out his hand to help the leper. Below the baby is a portrait of Jesus’ face. To the left of the portrait is Mary holding Christ after he is taken down from the cross. To the right is Jesus on the cross with two men praying at his feet. I showed Christ on the cross without blood or pain, because this image is to show the glory of Jesus’ life, not his pain. Above and to the right of the crucifix, Jesus again reaches for a desperate man. This signifies that Jesus is the savior of Mankind. To the right are the three kings looking at the baby Jesus. This illustrates that even the most high are to surrender to the King of Kings. Next is where Jesus stumbles while carrying the cross, and a man helps him to lift the cross again. This represents that each of us must accept the Lord and become a part of him. There are over one hundred different cloud images that make up the background. Some were taken in Florida, Iowa, Colorado, California, Kentucky, and Michigan. I guess the clouds alone prove that God is everywhere.Model Release on file On Trial“’What shall I do than with Jesus who is called the Christ?’ Pilate asked? They answered, ‘Crucify him!’‘Why, what crime has he committed?’But they shouted louder, ‘Crucify him!’”In this image Christ is on trial before the people. I made Christ much larger than life to illustrate that he was the Son of Man. The pillars extend up to the heavens, while a small chain surrounds Christ that could not hold him there. This shows his willingness to go to the cross.Model Release on file Sacrificial Lamb“Worthy is the Lamb that was slain, to receive power and wealth and wisdom and strength and honor and glory and praise!” (Revelations 5:12 NIV)This image has over four hundred photographs of white doves alone. The doves represent the perfect and complete presence of the Holy Spirit. Christ’s crucified hands are the focal point while holding the Lamb of God. The four horses in the corners of the image depict the four winds, north, south, east, and west that cover the earth. Several additional portraits of Jesus can be found displaying his atonement.Model Release on file "He who has compassion on them will guide them and lead them beside springs of water." Isaih 49:10 NIV The first image created in the Reflections of Christ portfolio.Model release on file It’s Your Move“But if serving the Lord seems undesirable to you, then choose for yourselves this day whom you will serve, whether it is the gods your forefathers served beyond the river, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land you are living. But as for my household, and me, we will serve the Lord.” (Joshua 24:15 NIV)I have always favored the game of chess. It represents a battle between two forces. Here, the game represents the reality of life or death. We all choose our destiny…therefore…it’s your move. This chess game theme is played out again in the “Fallen Angel” image, which represents the souls that have chosen not to live with Christ.Model release on file Offerings left on an altar inside a chapel.
